Policy for the Supervision of Sailing for Junior and Cadet Sailors

Runswick Bay Beach and Sailing Club welcomes both Cadet and Junior Sailors and wishes to support them in developing their sailing skills and confidence. Safety is paramount and so parents are asked to follow the following rules.

Supervision

1. All junior/cadet sailors are the responsibility of their parents while out sailing.

2. Parents must ensure that their children are properly attired for the conditions and they are wearing a helmet and a lifejacket.

3. It is important that each child/young person has someone watching them from the shore who will ensue they are not on the water for too long so they do not get too cold or overtired. If you are an inexperienced sailor and do not feel able to make these decisions for your child, you should appoint someone to do this for you.

4. Parents are asked to begin to educate their children in becoming aware of their own limitations and that of their crew and not to exceed them. If they start to feel cold or tired they must return to the shore.

Safety Boat

The club has a safety boat which is manned on a Sunday afternoon. During racing, the safety boat crew will be focussed on the race. In an emergency they will leave the race to assist however, they will not be watching others out sailing at this time. If your children are fun sailing at this time it is essential that you or someone you appoint are on the shore looking out for your child and that they know how to contact the safety boat by radio in an emergency situation. If you are in any doubt do not let your child sail during this time and arrange with the Commodore for the Safety Boat to be on standby before or after the race.
