When the Sailing Officer is on duty, he will use his best endeavours to ensure that the following activities are monitored:
1. Determine from Sailing Secretary and or Committee Member the nature of the sailing programme for the day - he will normally do this by attending the briefing at the relevant time.
2. He will have a record and knowledge of exactly who is afloat, from the use of signing on sheets to be kept in the bar area of the club house. Two signing on sheets, one for racing and one for casual sailing will be allocated.
3. Will be provided with a VHF Radio, so as to communicate effectively with the safety boat, using the agreed channels M1 & M2. The Sailing Officer is able to advise the safety boat and alert them of required action if necessary. He may also use Channel 11 to contact the Runswick Bay Rescue Boat if necessary.
4. He is to closely monitor the launching of each boat to ensure that those going sailing in club boats or taking part in racing wear personal buoyancy and helmets where necessary, and that in their handling of the boat that they do not put themselves at risk of injury-he should be aware of what the potential risks are.
5. He will assist in recovering boats to the shore in rough conditions.
6. He is to learn and show the hand signals used in sail training and the dinghy distress signal.
